All the Gadgets – Episode 21

Zac hosting episode 21. Picture with podcast title and logo on it.

Correction:

Last episode, I stated that the display on the OnePlus 7 Pro had a 120Hz refresh rate.. What I meant to say, and what is actually correct is that it supports up to 90Hz refresh rate and can also be 60Hz. This, along with the 1440p resolution allows it to have a really nice, smooth looking display.

Android 10

Google released Android 10 this summer, and included in the upgrade are a system wide dark mode, new privacy controls, and more features for consumers to control and watch their device and application usage.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Series and Revamped Galaxy Fold

The Samsung Galaxy Note devices are always the smartphones people recommend when it comes to productivity; at least, a certain kind of productivity that uses the S-pen, it’s included stylus. The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are very powerful as well, with top of thd line Snagdragon processors and plenty of RAM and storage. The Note 10 has a 6.4″ screen and the Note 10+ sports a 6.8″ display.

Samsung also released an updated, fortified version of their Galaxy Fold device. This foldable smartphone is a flagship phone that features a foldable plastic OLED display. More info at GSMArena or a video by Mr. Mobile.

Google Pixel 4 Leaks

The Google Pixel 4 is set to be announced on October 15, but we already know almost all of its specs and features because of leaks, rumors, and pictures. Video reviews and written reviews have already been completed by a few outlets that got their hands on early devices. Check out this video by This is Tech Today on YouTube that explains some new features on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL.

Hopefully a Pixel 4a device will come out in the near future to present an even better value proposition than the previous Pixel 3a series that is selling pretty well.

IFA 2019

HMD Global announced its new mid-range phones, the Nokia 6.2 and 7.2.

Also, a new phone by LG called the LG G8X is available for purchase in select markets. This device is an updated LG G8 that has the capability for a dual-screen attachment that contains a display the same as the one on the G8X, but can be used separately. TCL, a company known for their value TVs, announced a midrange smartphone christened the TCL Plex. This device is similar in specs to the forementioned Nokia 7.2, and sports a TCL-made screen that can display HDR content. It also has a 48MP main camera and a good price of €320. OnePlus 7t

When someone asks me what phone they should get in the $500 range that has powerful internals, runs Android, and looks nice, I am hard pressed to not recommend a OnePlus device. At the $500-600 price bracket, they offer more powerful CPU and graphics performace than a previous year’s flagship and have fast software updates for a clean version of Android. The OnePlus 7t is a continuation of their strategy to offer a premium software and power experience at a lower price than most flagships. It of course offers the latest Qualcomm processor, the Snagdragon 855+, 8GB of RAM, and fast UFS 3.0 storage of 128GB capacity. Even three rear cameras are included on the OnePlus 7t at the price of $599 in the US. I think it will be an interesting device that offers a great flagship experience at a lower flagship price. Learn more at Droid-Life’s OnePlus 7t review, or be impressed by the specs at GSMArena.

The OnePlus 7t will be available for purchase on October 18 in T-Mobile stores and online.

Apple Event

One of the most anticipated events for many tech enthusiasts and consumers is the fall Apple event. This year they announced the iPhone 11 series, a refreshed $329 iPad, and Apple Watch Series 5, and showed off iOS 13 and iPadOS.

The new iPhones are an improvement over the previous generation in camera, performance, and build quality. But they aren’t so much different than the previous generation besides for camera, although the iPhone 11, at $699, is $50 cheaper than the iPhone Xr. Because of this, the iPhone 11 to me is the best of this generation when it comes to bang-for-your-buck. You are getting the same build, software, and cameras (besides telephoto) of the more expensive iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max for a lower price, albeit with a lower resolution display.
